National Cup Finals

The finals of the English leagues Cup Competition took place over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd may, 2010 at Draycott Table Tennis Centre.

Wilmott Cup (Men)

Eight teams met in the finals with Stockton, North Middlesex, Maidenhead and Telford battling it out in Group A and Wembley/Harrow, Leeds, Worthing and Guildford C (last year’s winners) fighting for the honours in Group B. The two top seeds, Stockton and Wembley/Harrow, finished top of their groups and met to decide first and second place. After some very close matches in the group stages the final resulted in a fairly comfortable win, 3 –0, for the four man  Wembley/Harrow team of Eli Baraty, Darek Zurowski, James Sprackling and Ashley Stokes over the three man Stockton team of Andy Wilson, Tony Wilson and Mark Simon. The duo from Worthing, Peter Bartram and Gary Wilson overcame Jimmy Walsh and Steve Dobbins of North Middlesex 3 – 2 to come third and fourth respectively. On the third table another close match saw Guildford C (the holders) defeat Maidenhead by 3 – 2 and the final match resulted in Leeds defeating Telford by 3 – 1.

Carter Cup (Junior Boys)

Due to injury Hastings were unable to field a team so the Cup was contested by seven teams. Reading were favourites in Group A and Liam McTiernan and Jarred Knowles achieved expectations by winning the group. The Birmingham team of Adam Nutland and Aman Ubhi had a comfortable ride in Group B defeating North Middlesex, Leicester and Plymouth.

Birmingham emerged champions after a good 3 – 0 win against Reading in the play-offs for first and second place. The Hull lads of Reece Low and Michael Fraser  left it to the last match before they defeated North Middlesex’s Connor Neenan and Bradley Tuttle, 3 – 2,  for third and fourth place. North Herts finished fifth after overcoming Leicester 3 – 1 with the Plymouth youngsters finishing in seventh place.

Bromfield Trophy (Junior Girls)

Four teams played a Round Robin with the team from Derby of Abbie Milwain and Sophie Neil proving too strong for the opposition, to retain the trophy. Derby only dropped one match all day, the final one, when Isobel Ashley defeated Sophie Neil in a tough and well fought five setter. Chesterfield trio of Isobel Ashley, Hayley Gleeson and Frances Baker played well all day to defeat Guildford’s Lucy Burks and Feifei Pei, 3 – 2,  as well as the very young team from North Middlesex, Eda Aydin and Samantha Lei, also by 3 – 2. Guildford’s win of the day was over North Middlesex 5 – 0.
