National Junior League – London North 2009/10

Day 4 – Final Session
An exciting day’s play at Ellenborough TTC on Saturday 13th March 2010, saw Chelmsford holding 38 points as they went into their final match against Mossford, while Southend & District stood on 37 points prior to meeting Ellenborough “A”. When Chelmsford led 5 – 1 they appeared to have a big chance of ending as champions, since an 8 – 1 result would require Southend to beat Ellenborough “A” by 9 – 0 to equal 46 points. However, should Southend achieve this result they would be champions by virtue of their 5 – 4 win over Chelmsford on Day 3. In the event Chelmsford met stubborn late resistance from Mossford, who limited them to a 6 – 3 win, this requiring Southend to win by only a 7 – 2 margin, which they managed quite easily. In fact they won 9 – 0 against an Ellenborough side missing their two strongest players. Congratulations go to both Southend & District and Chelmsford, whose players were presented at the end of the afternoon’s play with their winners and runners-up medals.

Division 2 saw St. Edmunds College stroll to an unbeaten record and 52 points, their closest pursuers being a surprisingly strong Ellenborough “B” side, who finished on 46 points with only one defeat (at the hands of the St. Edmunds side on Day 3 of the competition). Again, well done to these two teams, who also received their medals at the end of the day.

Outstanding achievement award must undoubtedly go to Wembley & Harrow player Krisanth Tharmaratnam, who played in everyone of the 14 matches in which his team was involved in the 4 days of this competition, during which he won all 41 of the sets he was required to play. The leading averages of all players appear elsewhere in the Report.Alan Shepherd
